Why Small-Scale Horticulture Retailers Hold the Key to Food Resilience in Tanzania

The backbone of fresh produce, too often ignored?

When we talk about food security in East Africa, we tend to focus on production, seeds, land, and weather patterns. But the real challenge often lies in what happens after the harvest: distribution, spoilage, and access. And at the very center of that challenge is a group too often ignored, small-scale horticulture retailers.

The market heroes are hiding in plain sight.

These are the women and youth who sell tomatoes, carrots, and greens in local markets. They move perishable goods without cold chains, rely on last-minute brokers, and absorb price shocks with no buffer. Despite it all, they keep our cities fed.

What AgrixTZ is doing

At AgrixTZ, we’re building a tech-enabled system that gives these retailers visibility, reliable supply connections, and access to fair trade prices. This isn’t about disruption, it’s about elevation. When we empower the people already doing the work, the entire chain becomes more ethical, more resilient, and more human.
